It’s 3:31 AM, and i’ve been up all night coding some cool new stuff for Future Astronauts. I thought that now it’s done, I should post a bit of an update, so here go’s.
The new stuff doesn’t really add that much of a visual overhaul, but it does help to future proof the website a bit. First and foremost, the entire site is now running on a secure SSL connection. The main reason for this is obviously making the site more secure, but it’s also paving the way for some more cool stuff down the road.
Secondly, as you probably noticed, all new visitors are asked if they would like to receive notifications from us (Chrome users only at the moment). Ever since we launched our mailing list a while back, a fair few people have been asking for other ways to stay updated on new episodes and the like, and since facebook has been severely limiting our post reach, this seemed like a pretty decent option. If you opt in, you’ll get updates as soon as new shows are posted, even if you’re not on our website at the time.
The third change is we’ve moved over to Mixcloud. A big reason for us going down this route is the way Soundcloud are now handing out takedown notices and copyright strikes for mixes and podcasts. We thought it’d be best to preemptively transfer over to a more podcast-friendly platform and rely less on Soundclouds API. All future podcasts will be available on our website, iTunes and on Mixcloud.
This is becoming a bit of a long post, but one last bit of news; we’re closing down Future Astronauts Live (for the time being). The main reason is that currently, Future Astronauts is a one man team, and I just don’t have the time to build and grow the radio on my own. Rather than let it sit there without updates, i thought it’d be best to close it completely for now, and then look at bringing it back in the future. I’m really sorry to those of you who enjoy listening to it, but there are some excellent alternatives out there. Plus it means I can focus on the podcasts more 🙂
